How It's Inherited
"I’m nominating Shamonica Wiggins because her drive, determination and passion to motivate, inspire and uplift all those in the Sickle Cell Community. It comes naturally with Shamonica, it’s not forced, she was born to do this. I don’t know another candidate that is more deserving of this then Shamonica. She continues to push through adversity and she is making her mark in the community."
"I am nominating Shamonica Wiggins because she is the most dedicated and passionate advocate I know. Not only does Shamonica participate in awareness events, she is also always reaching out to the sickle cell community educating and supporting whoever she can."
NATIONAL SICKLE CELL ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR
"I would want them to know that people with sickle cell are much more than just patients!
That we are strong, resilient people." - Shamonica Wiggins
“I’ve been at this advocacy thing for about 4 years now. I never imagined that I would become such an important person within the sickle cell community. I never knew that spreading awareness was my passion. But I know now and I will not stop doing what I do until real changes come.”
Shamonica is a powerhouse when it comes to sickle cell advocacy. As founder and CEO of the non-profit organization, Bold Lips for Sickle Cell, she is bringing empowerment to people living with sickle cell disease in the boldest way that she can.
Shamonica was diagnosed with sickle cell disease type SS at 2 weeks old. When she was only three years old, she suffered from a stroke and placed on life support. Her mom was told that she would never be able to walk or talk properly again. She proved doctors wrong.
#BoldLipsForSickleCell was a challenge created by Shamonica in hopes to raise sickle cell awareness. The challenge showcased a variety of people wearing bold lip colors and posting selfies under the hashtag. This challenge took flight and the found major public figures participants such as singers, Monica, T-boz, and Jordin Sparks.
Shortly after the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America reached out to the group and made #BoldLipsForSickleCell the official awareness campaign to gain signatures for the petition to reauthorize the Sickle Cell Treatment Act. Bold Lips For Sickle Cell became a non-profit organization soon after. “Bold Lips For Sickle Cell is much more than just an awareness challenge. We stand for 3 things: awareness, advocacy and empowerment.”
Under her leadership, Bold Lips For Sickle Cell have hosted and co-hosted many events to bring awareness to sickle cell disease including the 4th Annual Patient and Family Sickle Cell Symposium. Bold Lips For Sickle Cell was awarded the “CBO on the Rise Award” by the Sickle Cell Community Consortium for their work with the sickle cell community.
In her free time, Shamonica provides an essential voice for the sickle cell community. She speaks on behalf of patients on panels, is a member of Rare Advocates Movement, attended Rare Disease Week in Washington DC, and hosts Let’s Talk, Facebook Live Events hosted by Bold Lips For Sickle Cell every Sunday. One issue she is particularly passionate about is mental health and wellbeing for those living with sickle cell disease.
“I feel God has blessed me with my life so I can help and encourage others with Sickle Cell. So I’ve turned my struggle into my testimony and that’s what fuels my passion for Bold Lips for Sickle Cell! My goal in life is to advocate so much for Sickle Cell that our future generations never have to face the struggles I’ve faced.”
